Question

I am reschooling an ex racehorse who is reluctant to go forwards.  I have had him for 1 year and he has improved but I have to be tactful as too much pushing makes him worse.  Any suggestions please?

Answer

With reference to your e-mail, try not to use pressure of any kind. I know sometimes this is harder said than done. If you can work in open spaces, such as fields gallops, lots of hacks. Not too much work in a school as this confines them and sometimes they go worse if in a school every day. Also in my experience if you ride to a strong contact this can also cause issues. I hope this is of some help. Best of luck with it.

Question

I am seeking information on a particular Stallion.  Can you help?

Answer

Hi there, many thanks for your enquiry. I do not know of this stallion 'Mozart', but if you know it's breed lines you can get in touch with the federation of which it is registered with.  They will be able to help you further.  It is very easy to do it online or ring them directly.

Question

My horse starts to run and fall on his forehand during extended trot.  What can I do?

Answer

You need to emphasise more weight on the hind leg.  Try to gain more collection and expression on short side of the arena first.  When asking for extension keep the trot slower to allow more time for the horse to come through from behind.  Make sure the horse is straight first before you ask.

Question

My horse comes above the bit each time I ride a transition.  Can you help?

Answer

Try to ride the hind leg more through the transition without loosing the connection on the outside leg.  Then try to concentrate on wrapping the horse around your inside leg to allow the horse to come up in the back.

Question

My horse does not respond to my inside leg?

Answer

Sit more so that your position allows you to put your knee in your knee roll and place your lower leg more on the girth thus allowing the shoulder to be more upright with more freedom.
