FGStud holds weekly evening course aimed at canditates wishing to take their BHS Stage 1, 2 and 3 care throughout the year. And for those owners / riders who want to learn more about caring for their horse and get a certificate which recognises this, there is the Horse Owners Certificate Levels 1 and 2.

The courses are held at FGStud with Alex. Alex is a BHS AI Intermediate Stable Manager and has trained both adults and children for their Pony Club Tests, Stage Exams and Horse Owners Certificates. The courses are fairly intensive and cover all the care syllabus for the stage 1, 2 and 3 care.

The Horse Owners Certificate is also a BHS initiative, aimed specifically at first time owners and owners who want to extend their knowledge. These courses run along side the Stage course and a written paper is set and marked, by Alex, at the end of the course. The paper covers the subjects covered throughout the course and if the pass mark (of 60%) is attained then the candidate will receive a certificate which recognises this.

The courses run for eight consecutive weeks from 18:30 - 20:30 at a cost of £100 for the full course or £15 per session  

COURSE DIARY

For Stage 1 & 2 and Horse Owners Certificate Levels 1 & 2

WEEK 1: The skeleton and main internal organs, A basic outline of the    foot and shoeing. A basic outline of the digestive system

WEEK 2: Preparing a horse for travelling. The theory of travelling. Fitting rugs and stable/travel/tail bandage

WEEK 3: Saddlery; care and fitting. Basic bitting. Fitting lunging equipment Boots, martingales etc…

WEEK 4: Grooming, clipping, trimming, plaiting

WEEK 5: Feeding, Watering, Grassland management

WEEK 6: Fittening, getting up from grass and roughing off

WEEK 7: Psychology, health and ailments

WEEK 8: Stable design and bedding. Accident procedure. Fire procedure. Safety in yard and on the road. About The BHS

A date for The Horse Owners Certificate exams will be set following completion of the course 

Lunging practice and Riding preparation for the Stage 2 and 3 exams can be arranged with Alex as a group or on an individual basis.
